Der Schock sitzt tief. Eine Woche gibt der Arzt ihm noch zu leben, dann wird der blutjunge Police Detective Emmett (PARTY OF FIVE Scott Wolf) an einer seltenen Krankheit sterben. Um nichts dem Zufall zu überlassen, engagiert der Verzweifelte einen undurchsichtigen Fremden (STIGMATA Gabriel Byrne), der verspricht, einen Killer auf ihn anzusetzen. Als sich die Diagnose jedoch als Irrtum herausstellt, kann Emmett den Vertrag nicht mehr auflösen: der Fremde, der ihm den Auftragsmörder besorgen sollte, wurde selbst zur Strecke gebracht und nun ist dem jungen Cop ein unbekannter Meuchler (PLANET OF THE APES Tim Roth) auf den Fersen.

Was sich eher wie ein gängiges Drama liest, ist tatsächlich ein sorgfältiger und hervorragend besetzter Thriller. Subtil hypnotisiert diese Elegie und baut unmerklich Hochspannung auf. Fern von Hektik und Aufdringlichkeit wird sensibel nach der Psychologie und realistisch nach der Situation der Figuren geforscht. Im Resultat eine kühl-poetische Kontemplation, die unter die Haut geht.

“Look, director and former Wilmington resident Keith Snyder isn’t reinventing the wheel. What he is doing is directing an assured, well-crafted feature film debut. If you watched Party of Five with any regularity, you’ll remember Scott Wolf as the Tom Cruise Jr. of the cast, whose acting you might not have noticed until his character, Bailey, became an alcoholic. Well, Bailey has grown up-(...) and he’s our leading man, a young overachieving detective fettered by a sense of urgency. Imagine how much more urgent he feels when he discovers he has only a matter of days to live. When Emmett hires someone to kill him (via negotiations with Gabriel Byrne, who in turn negotiates with Tim Roth), you’re correct in assuming all is not as it seems. Surprisingly, Scott Wolf is charismatic and believable enough to carry the film, but the presence of Byrne and Roth really helps. The film was shot entirely in Philadelphia (...) and it’s interesting to note how stylized the locations become on film. (...) Above all, this thriller (which will no doubt earn adjectives like "sexy" and "stylish") serves up plenty of suspense: My stomach was hurting from holding my breath. (...) it’s an auspicious debut.”
