Selten darf sich ein Film rühmen, die ganze Bandbreite des Festivals in sich aufzusaugen, um in einem cleveren Genre-Sprint von Grusel über Fantasy zu Sciencefiction zu düsen. Dabei setzt die Episodenschauermär mal auf Suspense, dann wieder auf schräge Comedy – und das gar mit romantischen Anklängen.

In April 1990, Japan’s leading broadcaster, Fuji TV, put to air a new format series, TALES OF THE UNUSUAL. The program quickly acquired a loyal audience, particularly among younger viewers. The four stories chosen by the producers and directors of the movie retain the style and format of the TV classics but also include several features which could never be realized on the small screen. The theme song is now a Japanese TV classic and signature tune for the popular presenter, Tamori, who guides his audience through the various stories. And varied they are!

ONE SNOWY NIGHT (by the director of HYPNOSIS) is a deeply disturbing horror story that was considered too graphic and horrific for TV. CHESS, with its vast set and complex shots, was considered unsuitable for TV but perfect for film. SAMURAI CELLULAR is a full-scale historical play and THE MARRIAGE SIMULATOR is a love story by one of Japan’s leading writers. The range of talent is incredible and the seasoned crew has done their very best to bring these complex stories to the silver screen. TALES OF THE UNUSUAL received this year’s Critics’ Prize at the 8th International Fantasy Film Festival of Gérardmer.
