Zu viel kann gar nicht genug sein in diesem überbordenden und im charmantesten Sinne naseweisen Abenteuerfilm, randvoll mit großen Gefühlen, großer Romantik, großem Wagemut und fantastischen Elementen. Hinreißend frech folgt hier auf jede noch so tolldreiste Actionsequenz ein noch furioserer Stunt und immer neue Wendungen werden aus dem Hut gezaubert, bis der erzählerische Faden uns irgendwann sanft entgleitet. Egal! Es ist einfach unmöglich, Jean-Paul Salomés Fantasy-Komödie über den legendären Haudegen und Gentleman-Gangster Lupin nicht zu erliegen, denn mit seiner Chuzpe und fast schon hyperventilierenden Begeisterung für sich selbst fegt der Film jeden Widerstand beiseite. Ähnlich wie bei PAKT DER WÖLFE oder VIDOCQ erzielt auch ARSÈNE LUPIN einen Zustand des absoluten Kintopps - frei von Subtexten und Messages, unentwegt berauscht an seinen Bildern, den Setpieces und seinem Helden, der in einer Ahnenreihe mit todesverachtenden Desperados wie Rudolf Valentino, Errol Flynn und Jean-Paul Belmondo steht.

Natürlich bietet sich die Figur des Arsène Lupin dafür an: Er ist ein klassischer Filmheld, ein ewiger Hallodri und Herzensbrecher, aus der Taufe gehoben im Fin de Siècle von Maurice Leblanc, der insgesamt 18 Romane mit den halsbrecherischen Eskapaden Lupins füllte, und so neben Fantomas einer der großen unsterblichen Abenteuerfiguren des französischen Kinos den Weg bereitete, eine Art Alte-Welt-Antwort auf Helden wie Zorro oder Flash Gordon. In Romain Duris, dem schlacksigen Akteur mit der Lässigkeit und Garderobe eines Tom Waits, bekannt aus L’AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE, wurde dabei ein Typ gefunden, der den vorangegangenen Lupin-Darstellern (darunter immerhin Jean-Claude Brialy und Jean-Pierre Cassel) mühelos das Wasser reicht.

Zum Inhalt: Als Verwandlungskünstler stiehlt der weltgewandte Lupin Damen der Gesellschaft Schmuck, Finanzen und Herz, bis er gezwungen wird, sich an der Suche nach den Königsjuwelen (derer er sich vor seinem in letzter Sekunde vereitelten Gang zur Guillotine noch entledigt hat) zu beteiligen. Vor allem die Bekanntschaft mit der mysteriösen und ewig jungen Gräfin von Cagliostro erweist sich als folgenschwer im auf unterhaltsamste Weise undurchschaubaren Handlungsgestrüpp, das ebenso virtuos zusammengeklaut ist wie Lupins Auskommen. Dumas, Verne und Hugo reichen sich hier die Hand im Bemühen um höchst möglichen Fun in guten zwei Stunden.
