Mit der zu erwartenden Kiwi-Halsstarrigkeit sperrt sich der neuseeländische Clip-Guru Greg Page gegen die üblichen Konventionen, mit denen wir bei einem Film rechnen, in dem zwei Kumpels auf dem Weg ins Wochenende bei einbrechender Nacht eine Abkürzung nehmen, sich von zwei 80s-Tussis den Kopf verdrehen lassen und mitten in die Scheiße fahren.

Eben noch dürfen Aufreißer Paul und sein sensibler Buddy Grant frohlocken, dass die einheimischen Girls so bereitwillig in ihr Auto steigen, da landen sie schon im Straßengraben. Die Mädchen hauen ab, das Auto ist futsch und, na ganz toll, die Handys sind tot. Also laufen die Jungs mit Taschenlampe los. Anfangs noch gut gelaunt. Nachdem sie weiteren 'Locals' begegnen, kippt die Stimmung allerdings schnell in den Keller und als die beiden in wilder Panik die Flucht ergreifen, rennen sie zu allem Unglück in entgegengesetzte Richtungen und geistern fortan sterbensseelenallein durch die böse Nacht...

Nicht von ungefähr finden sich Retro-Garage-Bands wie The Datsuns oder The D4 im Soundtrack: THE LOCALS ist wonnige 80er Verbeugung, das filmische Äquivalent von stürmischem Drei-Akkord-Rock, der weniger mit Subtilität, aber dafür mit viel Sturm und Drang glänzt. Page ackert sich sehr kompetent durch sein Galgenszenario, und am Schluss, wenn sich die Nacht der Ghouls einen Shyamalanschen Kopfstand erlaubt, geht der Film sogar ein bisschen zu Herzen. First-time director Greg Page’s ghost-horror film THE LOCALS is a story of two friends who accidentally enter a heartland of horror.

Grant and Paul hit the road for a weekend of surfing, booze and hopefully... girls. With night falling they take a short cut and meet Lisa and Kelly who invite them to a party. Lust takes the wheel and a game of cat and mouse begins leading them deep into the heartland of evil where they meet... The Locals.

Set in the dead of night in the scariest part of heartland New Zealand, where likeable, innocent young characters are pitted against the things humans fear the most: being lost, being in the dark and being chased by an unknown, menacing foe.

The Locals is the first feature for Page, whose award-winning short films Sarah’s Washing and Decaff have brought him international recognition. He is one of New Zealand’s foremost directors of music videos and television commercials and is known for his energetic, innovative style and appeal to the youth audience.

Kelly Rogers of Essential Films said this film is "a marvellously entertaining ghost horror film that will delight you, scare-the-pants off you, make you squeal, and send shivers down your spine. It maintains very high adrenalin levels throughout."
