Sheriff Williams hatte sich vom neuen Job im Städtchen Swamp Lovers’ Paradise nicht viel Arbeit erhofft. Stattdessen halten ihn die Untersuchung einer Mordserie, eine Bande Umweltaktivisten, ein wild unkender Indianer und nicht zuletzt ein unheimliches Ding im Sumpf davon ab, mit der ansässigen Grundschullehrerin Teri zu flirten. Nachdem es eine Weile still um Brett Leonard (THE LAWNMOWER MAN) war, meldet sich der Genremacher dieses Jahr gleich mit zwei Festivalbeiträgen zurück: dem pikant gewürzten FEED (Midnight Madness) und mit der Verfilmung eines weniger bekannten Marvel-Comics, dessen Rechte der US-Verleih Lions Gate einst im Package mit THE PUNISHER erwarb. So darf nun MAN THING, der kleine Sumpfmonster-Bruder des viel berühmteren SWAMP THING, das Licht der Welt bzw. die grünlich fahle Beleuchtung seines schlammigen (Studio)Wirkungskreises erblicken. Mit einem Budget, das vermutlich kaum über die Kaffeekasse von SPIDER-MAN hinausgeht, bastelt Leonard aus dem vage auf der Originalstory basierenden Script ein "Guilty Pleasure" für echte Comic-Fans. Zwar mit Kanten und Klischees, aber unterhaltsam und atmosphärisch gedippt in kunstbelichteten Cartoon-Look. Als Verbeugung vor der Jack Arnoldschen "School of Filmmaking" (THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) funktioniert dieses Öko-Monster-Movie bestens.

Kyle Williams (Matt Le Nevez) thought taking the new post of Sheriff in the sleepy town of Bywater would be exactly the change of pace he needed. Fresh air, peace and quiet - a town the locals fondly called "Swamp Lovers’ Paradise" sounded like the perfect place. But the peaceful town is not what it seems. While investigating a series of gruesome murders, Kyle discovers that the locals are hiding a frightening secret. Deep within the swampy waters surrounding the town, there is something killing its people.

During Kyle’s struggle to find the truth, he is confronted by the intimidating oil baron Frederic Schist (Jack Thompson), whose corrupt company dominates the tiny town. Other townsfolk try to get involved, but their eccentric behaviour only confuses his investigation. Meanwhile, local Native American elder Pete Horn (Rawiri Paratene) warns Kyle of an ancient force that has been awoken in the darkest waters of the bayou. Schist is predictably vocal in dismissing Horne’s mysterious prophecies as spiritual mumbo jumbo, but there is something about Pete’s words that holds a haunting truth for the instinctive Kyle.

Torn between who, and what to believe, the only straight answers he receives are from feisty young schoolteacher Teri (Rachel Taylor). Together they embark on a quest to unravel the truth. Kyle was after a slice of quiet bayou life - but when he discovers what lies beneath the mystery of the swamp, it gives new meaning to the phrase 'the terrifying force of nature'.
